About Chestnut Mushroom
The Chestnut Mushroom (Agrocybe aegerita) is a gourmet favorite known for its rich, nutty flavor and attractive chestnut-brown caps that fade to cream at the margins. This species fruits in dense clusters on supplemented sawdust and is one of the more rewarding intermediate-level mushrooms to grow indoors. It offers a flavor complexity that's hard to find in common grocery mushrooms, making it a standout for home cultivators who cook.
Culinary Uses
Chestnut Mushrooms deliver a deep, nutty, slightly sweet flavor that shines in soups, risottos, and sautés. The caps hold their shape well during cooking and develop a pleasant umami depth when browned in butter or olive oil. Pairs beautifully with thyme, garlic, and hard cheeses — try them over polenta or folded into pasta for a restaurant-quality dish at home.
Growing Notes
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Preferred substrate: Supplemented hardwood sawdust (with wheat bran or soy hulls)
- Fruiting temperature: 60–75°F (16–24°C)
- Colonization speed: Fast
- Special considerations: Chestnut Mushrooms fruit readily in dense bouquets and benefit from a light casing layer. Provide moderate fresh air exchange and high humidity (90%+) during pin formation. Harvest before caps flatten fully for the best texture and shelf life.
Usage Instructions
- Sanitize your work area, tools, and contact surfaces before handling.
- Prepare grain, substrate, agar, or grow kits according to your standard operating procedures.
- Introduce the liquid culture using sterile or near-sterile technique (e.g., in front of a flow hood or still-air box when applicable).
- Maintain species-appropriate incubation and fruiting conditions for temperature, humidity, and fresh air exchange.
Shelf Life & Storage
Store refrigerated at 34–39°F (1–4°C) away from direct sunlight. Under proper storage, typical shelf life is 3–6 months unopened. Always visually inspect for contamination, damage, or off-odors before use.
Quality & COA
Each batch is prepared using standardized procedures and test-inoculated on appropriate media before release. These internal checks act as our in-house Certificate of Analysis (COA) to confirm viability and cleanliness at the time of packaging.
Strain Profile

How to Use This Liquid Culture
- Sterilize the injection port on your grain bag with an alcohol prep pad.
- Shake the syringe vigorously for 10-15 seconds to disperse the mycelium evenly.
- Inject 1-2cc of liquid culture through the self-healing injection port of your grain bag. Less is more — 1cc is usually plenty.
- Seal and incubate the bag at 70-75°F in a clean, dark space.
- Wait for colonization — white mycelium will begin spreading through the grain within 2-4 weeks.
Temperature & Timeline: Colonization typically takes 2-4 weeks at 70-75°F. Warmer is not better — temperatures above 80°F increase contamination risk.
Signs of Success: You'll see white, fluffy mycelium spreading outward from injection points. The grain will become covered in a uniform white coating when fully colonized.
Next Steps: Once the grain is fully colonized, transfer it to a bulk substrate or introduce fruiting conditions, depending on your setup.
Common Mistake: Injecting too much liquid culture does not speed up colonization — it wastes culture and can introduce excess moisture that encourages contamination. Stick to 1-2cc per bag.

Shipping & Storage
Shipping & Storage
All orders ship within 1-2 business days from our Colorado facility. Liquid cultures ship in insulated packaging to maintain viability. Store LC syringes in the refrigerator (35-45°F) until use. Grain spawn and substrate bags should be used within 2 weeks of delivery for best results. Ready-to-fruit blocks can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
Our Clean-or-Replace Guarantee
Our Clean-or-Replace Guarantee
Every liquid culture is test-inoculated on agar before release to verify purity and viability. If your culture arrives contaminated or fails to colonize, contact us within 14 days with a photo and we'll send a free replacement. No return required.

New to Mushroom Growing?
If this is your first grow, we recommend starting with a All-in-One Grow Bag or a Ready-to-Fruit Block — both are designed for beginners and require minimal equipment. For liquid culture use, you'll also need a grain spawn bag and a substrate bag. Check out our growing guides for step-by-step instructions.
