About Turkey Tail
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) is the most-researched functional mushroom on the planet and one of the most visually striking — concentric rings of color ranging from rust and brown to blue-green and cream, fanning out across hardwood logs and stumps like, well, a turkey's tail. While not a culinary mushroom (the fruiting body is too tough to eat), Turkey Tail is a powerhouse of immune-supporting compounds and the source of polysaccharopeptides (PSP) and PSK, the latter used as an adjuvant therapy in Japanese oncology for decades. For functional-mushroom growers, this is foundational.
Growing Notes
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Preferred substrate: Hardwood sawdust blocks, hardwood logs (oak, maple, beech, alder)
- Fruiting temperature: 55–75°F
- Colonization speed: Moderate to slow
- Special considerations: Turkey Tail forms thin, leathery brackets rather than fleshy mushrooms — fruiting requires high humidity and a horizontal surface or log orientation. On sawdust blocks, it fruits from the cut edges and top. Long shelf life as a dried functional product once harvested.
Functional Benefits
Turkey Tail is the gold standard of immune-supporting mushrooms. Its polysaccharopeptides — PSP and PSK (Krestin) — are among the most studied mushroom compounds in the world, with PSK approved as an adjuvant cancer therapy in Japan since the 1970s. Rich in beta-glucans that modulate immune response, Turkey Tail is typically dried, dual-extracted, and consumed as tea, tincture, or powder for immune support during and after illness.
Usage Instructions
- Sanitize your work area, tools, and contact surfaces before handling.
- Prepare grain, substrate, agar, or grow kits according to your standard operating procedures.
- Introduce the liquid culture using sterile or near-sterile technique (e.g., in front of a flow hood or still-air box when applicable).
- Maintain species-appropriate incubation and fruiting conditions for temperature, humidity, and fresh air exchange.
Shelf Life & Storage
Store refrigerated at 34–39°F (1–4°C) away from direct sunlight. Under proper storage, typical shelf life is 3–6 months unopened. Always visually inspect for contamination, damage, or off-odors before use.
Quality & COA
Each batch is prepared using standardized procedures and test-inoculated on appropriate media before release. These internal checks act as our in-house Certificate of Analysis (COA) to confirm viability and cleanliness at the time of packaging.
Strain Profile

How to Use This Liquid Culture
- Sterilize the injection port on your grain bag with an alcohol prep pad.
- Shake the syringe vigorously for 10-15 seconds to disperse the mycelium evenly.
- Inject 1-2cc of liquid culture through the self-healing injection port of your grain bag. Less is more — 1cc is usually plenty.
- Seal and incubate the bag at 70-75°F in a clean, dark space.
- Wait for colonization — white mycelium will begin spreading through the grain within 2-4 weeks.
Temperature & Timeline: Colonization typically takes 2-4 weeks at 70-75°F. Warmer is not better — temperatures above 80°F increase contamination risk.
Signs of Success: You'll see white, fluffy mycelium spreading outward from injection points. The grain will become covered in a uniform white coating when fully colonized.
Next Steps: Once the grain is fully colonized, transfer it to a bulk substrate or introduce fruiting conditions, depending on your setup.
Common Mistake: Injecting too much liquid culture does not speed up colonization — it wastes culture and can introduce excess moisture that encourages contamination. Stick to 1-2cc per bag.

Shipping & Storage
Shipping & Storage
All orders ship within 1-2 business days from our Colorado facility. Liquid cultures ship in insulated packaging to maintain viability. Store LC syringes in the refrigerator (35-45°F) until use. Grain spawn and substrate bags should be used within 2 weeks of delivery for best results. Ready-to-fruit blocks can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
Our Clean-or-Replace Guarantee
Our Clean-or-Replace Guarantee
Every liquid culture is test-inoculated on agar before release to verify purity and viability. If your culture arrives contaminated or fails to colonize, contact us within 14 days with a photo and we'll send a free replacement. No return required.

New to Mushroom Growing?
If this is your first grow, we recommend starting with a All-in-One Grow Bag or a Ready-to-Fruit Block — both are designed for beginners and require minimal equipment. For liquid culture use, you'll also need a grain spawn bag and a substrate bag. Check out our growing guides for step-by-step instructions.
